Lionel Richie is releasing a new duet album called “Tuskegee” as a tribute to his southern upbringing in Tuskegee, AL. He is re-recording some of the biggest country stars in the business including Kenny Chesney, Shania Twain, Darius Rucker, Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland, Jason Aldean, and many more. Listen and watch the preview of each song here!
I’m pretty conflicted with hearing some of Lionel’s country remixes mainly because his R&B songs are so iconic from the 80s and 90s. Lionel’s slow ballad hit “Hello” seems more gimmecky when Jennifer Nettles brings in her twangy voice to the duet. But, some songs like “Stuck On You” with Darius Rucker fits both guy’s voices more.
In this clip, Shania Twain meets up with Lionel Richie to re-record “Endless Love,” which she even admits to being somewhat scared to perform the song with him because of his popularity. Lionel and Shania perform the song in a bedroom in order to calm the nerves of Shania, which puts her own twist to the song and which comes out to be a pretty good adaptation of Lionel’s original duet with Diana Ross.
One of my favorites I think will be Kenny Chesney and Lionel Richie’s song “My Love.” I think this album would be better if Lionel would just create new country songs with these artists, but I guess you can reach an age where you can take your own songs and remix them to any genre of music you want to.
