While he was on his way to promote his new album and book, R. Kelly became ill and returned to a Chicago hospital for medical treatment.
According to a statement from his camp, the singer was on his way to New York City on Wednesday (June 27) morning to promote his new memoir, SoulaCoaster: The Diary of Me, when he complained of feeling ill. The statement said he was suffering from complications relating to a surgery he had in 2011 to treat an abscess on his vocal cords.
Kelly cancelled appearances on NBC’s Today, The Jimmy Fallon Show, as well as a buzz heavy book party that was scheduled for the evening. Such stars as Wyclef Jean, Jordin Sparks and Alicia Keys was set to attend.
In a recently released excerpt from his memoir, Kelly detailed his time working with Michael Jackson. He explained how he became emotional after Jackson complemented him on the song he wrote for MJ, “You are Not Alone.”
“‘If you excuse me for a minute,’ I said, ‘I’ll be right back.’ I walked to the bathroom and just fell out on the floor. I broke down and cried. It wasn’t that Michael Jackson was singing my song; it was that Michael had felt how I’d caught his spirit.”
Kelly’s new album, Write Me Back, dropped this Tuesday and his memoir, Soulacoaster: The Diary of Me, is set for release Thursday. Check out his interview with Tavis Smiley about his music below. --Keith Murphy, CBS Local
