Christmas time is absolutely my favorite time of the year. The holiday cheer and well wishes, seeing family and friends again, and of course the delicious food. I feel like I start eating on Thanksgiving and don’t stop until New Years!

However, as I revel in the magnificence of Yuletide greetings I can’t help but notice a few very interesting traditions that we practice in the spirit of the season.

Without a second thought,we justify some pretty eccentric ideas. Take a look at my Top 10 Weirdest Things About Christmas!

1. The Lore of Santa Claus
Thank heavens Santa is not real, because quite frankly, if he were, he’d be locked up by now. Think about it, he makes a living breaking and entering and bouncing little kids on his lap. Oh, and not to forget his endless travel without a passport delivering “presents”. What would the NSA have to say about that?

2. The Disappointment of Really Bad Presents
It happens to everyone at least once in their lives and for an unfortunate few they expect it every year. The usual offense comes in the form of garish sweaters or useless items that no one on the planet knows what to do with. All the while, as you unwrap the atrocious offering you’re thinking smile, be pleasant. It’s the thought that counts.

3. The Dreaded Curse of the Combination Present
If your birthday falls around Christmas then you have an idea of what I am referring to. Instead of a separate present for your birthday and another for Christmas, many December-born guys and gals only receive one present. You have to admit that’s just not fair.

4. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
Rudolph has a red nose that lights up. Most people would say that warrants a trip to the emergency room not a reason for employment.

5. Mistletoe
The origin of Mistletoe may leave some wondering why we kiss under it. Derived from the Anglo-Saxon word mistletan, meaning “dung twig”, mistletoe grows from the excrement of a bird called the mistle thrush. Think about that the next time you’re asked for a kiss underneath this festive holiday plant!

6. Fruitcake
What’s up with the holiday fruitcake? It has to be just about the worst gift that you can give someone and every year this foul concoction of heavy carbs, fruit, and nuts find its way onto someone’s Christmas list. No wonder people joke about it being passed along for years from person to person.

7. The Origin of Christmas
Although Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, if one were to really look into its origins you would find that not only is there no evidence that Christ was born on December 25, but Christmas in fact has roots in Saturnalia and Deus Sol Invictus; both pagan festivals. The irony in this is found because the Christian church is well-documented to strongly disapprove of pagan celebrations.

Christmas Tree

8. The Christmas Tree
As a kid I always remember my mother stressing us to leave all things that belong outdoors, outside. That includes little bugs, sticks, rocks, and dirt. So the thought of hauling a six-foot tree indoors would be horrifying—that is unless it is a Christmas tree! Christmas, the only time the outdoors come indoors and we dress it up with bright little bobbles, willingly creating a fire hazard in our own home.

9. The Shopping Season
People go all out, over-extending themselves, to start the New Year, a time of rebirth and rejuvenation, in debt.

10. Christmas Lyrics
Okay, I love Christmas music. Especially if it sounds like Boyz II Men “Silent Night” or anything from Mariah Carey. But, have you ever taken the time to actually ponder the words from some of our favorite songs of the season? Many of the lyrics are very clear while others seem shrouded in mystery. Exp: What on earth is the significance of “a partridge in a pear tree” and who really wants “Lords a leaping” and “maids a milking” for a gift? Thanks but no thanks Twelve Days of Christmas!
