Q&A: Eve On Her Comback Album ‘Lip Lock’ & Rap’s New Female Stars

The last time Grammy-winning rapper Eve released an album, neither Facebook or Twitter existed, Fergie had just joined the Black Eyed Peas and The Eminem Show was the best-selling album of the year.

The year was 2002, and Eve was still riding high on her GRAMMY win for the first-ever Best Rap/Sung Collaboration prize with No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani, “Let Me Blow Ya Mind.” Her third album, Eve-Olution, would peak at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 album chart, thanks to the Alicia Keys-assisted, No. 2 single “Gangsta Lovin’.”

Now more than a decade later, the woman once known as the “First Lady” of the Ruff Ryders hip-hop crew led by rapper DMX is back with her fourth album, Lip Lock, released last week (May 14) on her own record label, From The Rib.

“All of my decisions are tough right now, because it’s me,” she told Radio.com, adding that she now has the final word on everything from music videos to choosing her singles. “But I still have a huge support system. I have an amazing team of people. Not that I didn’t have that at Ruff Ryders, but there were extra hangers-on. I don’t have hangers-on like I used to. It is more of a business now. I love it, I think it’s fun. I definitely know a lot more information than I ever thought I should know!”

This Week At Speed Street: SWV

The unofficial kick off to the summer season happens this Memorial weekend and a great way to usher it in would be to attend Food Lion’s Speed Street in uptown Charlotte beginning Thursday. This is the 19th annual celebration and as always there will be plenty of fun, food and entertainment.

Earlier this week we told you about two great acts that will perform on opening night which includes Jon B. who we featured on Monday. Today we bring you the other 90s artist who will light up the stage, Sisters With Voices better known as SWV.

They broke on the scene in 1992 with the debut album ‘It’s About Time’ which sold over 3 million copies and produced major hits ‘I’m So Into You’, ‘Weak’ and ‘Right Here/Human Nature.’ To the delight of many fans SWV reunited in 2005 and most recently released a 2012 album. The trio have won numerous music awards throughout their career along with sales of millions of singles and albums. SWV are considered one of the most successful acts of the 1990s.
